Dance, theatrics at ECA on May 2

Variety is the spice of life, emphasize members of Dance Theatre of Oregon, who creatively blend the best of a variety of performance arts.  The group will bring their special blend of dance and theatrics to the stage at Edmonds Center for the Arts 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 2. White Cane Days May 3

On Friday, May 2, the Edmonds Lions Club will be at Safeway and QFC in Westgate from 12 to 6 p.m. and on Saturday, May 3, they will be at QFC in Westgate and Petosa’s Family Grocer in Edmonds from 10 to 6 p.m. for White Cane Days.   The club encourages residents to drop by and offer support for this worthwhile cause.  For more information call Red Bingham at (425) 778-3848.

 

MHS presents Mother’s Day Bazaar

The Meadowdale High School Art & Photography Clubs are proud to present their first ever Mother’s Day Bazaar from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 3. This will be a one-day sale featuring 25 local artists and crafters. Artwork for sale will include everything from handmade fused glass, funky t-shirts, edible treats, gift cards, to one-of-a-kind jewelry. A student art gallery will also be created to showcase the amazing artists MHS teaches in its art programs. The group is still actively looking for artists to participate in this sale, which is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 3, the weekend before Mother’s Day. Yost Park stewardship

Give nature a hand!  The Edmonds Backyard Wildlife Habitat Project will host a free community stewardship event from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 3 at Yost Park.  For those who would like to spend a few hours helping to remove invasive English Ivy and plant evergreen trees in the park, here is your chance! Bring your own gardening tools and gloves. Training, supervision and light refreshments will be provided. Information will be available on recycling, composting, and the Edmonds Backyard Wildlife Habitat Project will host various backyard wildlife information tables and hands-on activities. Community Lighthouse events this month

An Edmonds Community Lighthouse meeting is scheduled for 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, May 5 at Harbor Inn Motel (130 - West Dayton St.).  The topic of the meeting is “Celebrate Friendship.”  The Edmonds Community Lighthouse is also leading a “Prayer Walk” in front of the Edmonds ferry dock from 10 to 11 a.m. Sunday, May 17.  For more information call (425) 422-1036 or (425) 218-4391.

 

MS Support Group meets

The Sno-King MS Support Group meets from 6:30 to 8:45 p.m. Tuesday, May 6 at the Edmonds United Methodist church (Aldersgate Room – lower level, West side entrance).  The church address is: 828 – Caspers Street.  Guest speaker Dr. Theodore Brown, a board certified member of the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, will discuss exercise principles in MS, management of spasticity and other MS symptoms.  To request a ride to and from the meeting, call (425) 776-5115 and leave a message.  For more information, call (425) 712-1804.

 

 

Mayfair Sale May 8

Stevens Hospital’s annual Mayfair Sale comes just in time for Mother’s Day!  The sale will be held from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Thursday, May 8 in the hospital’s second-floor cafeteria.  Beautiful plants, herbs and flowering baskets as well as an assortment of crafts will be for sale.  Crafts include jewelry, the Beekeeper products, wood crafts, decorated pots, hanging baskets and planters. All proceeds benefit The Stevens Hospital Auxiliary, which funds many important services at Stevens Hospital. Moonlight Swing Orchestra perform

The local “Moonlight Swing Orchestra” presents an evening of music from the 1940s and 50s – the music of the Dorseys, Benny Goodman, Harry James, and others – on the eve of Mother’s Day, from 2:30 to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 10.  The venue will be the Edmonds Church of God (8224 – 220th St. SW).  Tickets: $5 at the door or church office. Rollin’ Rails Model Railroad

The Swamp Creek Model Railroad Association is hosting its 22nd Rollin’ Rails Model Railroad Show for children of all ages on Saturday, May 10.  The venue will be the gym at Edgewood Baptist Church, where local model railroad groups will show off their layouts and trains. Several of them are very child-friendly for children as young as 3 or 4 years old.

 

Auction benefits Braille students

Where can you walk into one room to buy a ride on a fire engine, a travel book autographed by Rick Steves, tickets to the Seattle Symphony or a Cougars' football game, and an antique wooden storage chest? Answer: the Louis Braille School's 2nd annual Benefit Auction, to be held 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 17 at the Edmonds Conference Center (201 – Fourth Ave. N).  Hands-on exhibits will be displayed at the auction so that attendees can attempt simple tasks while wearing goggles that simulate vision disorders. Everyone will have an opportunity to see his or her name written in Braille. Auctions items can be previewed at the School's Web site, beginning on May 1, by visiting www.louisbrailleschool.org. Gallery hosts local artists

The Edmonds Art Gallery (524 - Main St.) will host artist members of the Seattle Co-Arts and the Northwest Stone Sculptors Association for two events this month.  Artist receptions will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, May 4, and again during the Third Thursday Art Walk from 5 to 8 p.m. May 14.  Regular gallery hours are Wednesdays to Saturdays 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sundays noon to 6 p.m.  For more information go to JoanLongstaff.com and click “enter the gallery.”

May Fest on tap May 17

 

A fashion show will be among events featured in May Fest, hosted by the South County Senior Center (220 Railroad Avenue), from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 17.  Live music and entertainment, including an appearance by Happy the Clown, will accompany a fashion show featuring treasures from the Thrift Store. Also on the program:  a silent auction of collectibles, raffles, prizes, face painting, food and fun.  Admission is $2 in advance or $3 at the door. Golf classic Fund-raiser

The first annual Ed-Lynn Community Classic, a community golf tournament helping to raise money for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Snohomish County and the Edmonds and Lynnwood Food Banks, is set for Saturday, June 23.  The venue will be the Lynnwood Municipal Golf Course.  Participants check-in at 12:30 p.m., putting contest at 1 p.m., and shotgun start at 2 p.m.  Cost: $75 per player (includes BBQ dinner).  For more information, visit www.edlynnclassic.com.

 

 

Toastmasters meets weekly

Jazz Connection rocks on May 24

 

Acclaimed jazz singer Kevin Mahogany and the Phil Kelly Big Band highlight the 8th annual Edmonds Jazz Connection on the Memorial Day weekend. Sponsored by Edmonds Rotary Daybreakers and Edmonds Center For The Arts, the event begins at 10 a.m. and ends with a 7:30 p.m. concert Saturday, May 24. Events are free except for the evening concert at the arts center.  Tickets may be purchased online at www.ec4arts.org or by phone at (425) 275-9595; ticket prices are $30 for adults and $15 for students. Money raised through ticket sales supports the Burned Children Recovery Foundation.

 

Classic yacht rendezvous 

Twenty classic wooden yachts will be on public display and open for free tours at the Rotary's Edmonds Waterfront Festival from May 30 to June 1.   The Classic Yacht Association's Third Annual Rendezvous will take place at the guest moorage area at the beautiful Port of Edmond's Marina in conjunction with the festival.  These sleek vessels, adorned with teak, oak and mahogany bright work have been maintained in pristine condition.   Polished chrome and brass cleats, horns, scoops and winches abound on the desks and pilot houses, that enclose exquisitely restored staterooms, galleys and saloons, will be available for viewing on Saturday, May 31 and Sunday, June 1 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. 

 

Kids fish free

Edmonds Laebugten Salmon Chapter will celebrate its annual open house in conjunction with the 21st annual Edmonds Waterfront Festival from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, May 31 and June 1.  The venue for the open house is Willow Creek (aka Deer Creek) Fish Hatchery (Follow SR 104 to Edmonds then go west on Pine Street). The event will provide fun for the whole family, with free trout fishing for kids 12 and under; Chapter members will clean the fish. There will also be free coffee, popcorn, juice, and cookies, as well as tours of the fish hatchery.  A free shuttle bus will run from the Edmonds Waterfront Festival site every 20 minutes from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. during both days.  For more information, call Trout Unlimiteds at the Willow Creek Fish Hatchery at (425) 771-5970.

 

YWCA needs household items

The YWCA Pathways for Women shelter near Edmonds Community College is in need of sets of dishes, silverware, pots and pans, bedding, towels, and food for the families moving in to the shelter and to give to the families who are moving off site into transitional housing.  The YWCA shelter is no longer accepting clothing at the site, to make room for the above items that they are in need of at this time.  If you or a group would like to sponsor a project or drive to obtain these desperately needed items, call Community Affairs Coordinator Luanne Kunz at (425) 258-2766 (ext. 150) or visit the website at lkunz@ywcaworks.org.
