Editor:

On February 9, voters in the Edmonds School District will make an important decision that will affect our quality of life and the health of our economy.  By approving the school levy proposal on the ballot, voters can invest in kids, invest in jobs, and invest in the future of our economy.

The Edmonds School District serves nearly 20,000 students every year, and consistently ranks as one of the best school districts in the state.  This reputation is based on the strong local support from voters in the past.

Nearly 20 percent of the funding for our schools comes from the School Programs and Operation Levy that is on the ballot.  This critical measure keeps classes small, ensures safe transportation for kids, and supports the day-to-day work of classroom teachers.

The bottom line is this: if this measure fails, our schools will suffer.  While there is a real cost to extending these measures for several more years, the cost of bad schools and poorly educated students is far worse for our community.

I serve on the House Education Committee in Olympia, and I am so proud of the leadership role our school district plays statewide.  Our schools are preparing kids for college, training future aerospace workers, and providing jobs for thousands of teachers and school employees.  As our economy begins the slow process of recovery, great schools will be a critical element to our success.

I voted yes for my local schools, I hope you will join me.  Remember to postmark your ballot by February 9. For more information, you can visit www.edmonds.wednet.edu.
