An open letter to Mack and Janice Mateson:

Your smarmy, condescending letter in the November 12 Edmonds Beaconregarding Barbara Mercer's shock at seeingtreeshad beenremoved from 5th and Dayton was uncalled for.

I knew the trees were going to be removed weeks ago butI drove through that intersection the day the trees were cut down andI was just as shocked as Barbara to see what had been done.

Are you aware that Barbarahassuccessfully operated theEdmonds Frame Shop and Atelier for years?

She has done outstanding work for many of us and has made a significant contribution to the arts community in Edmonds.

We are all fortunate that she is still with us after the horrendous accident that almost took her life in March of 2007.

Barbara is a productive citizen and retailer in Edmonds and deserves more respect than what you provided in your letter.

Come come, indeed.
