In August of 2006, a team consisting of: Shirley Wilson, Rupert Walworth, Liz Glover, and I headed to Spokane, Washington to co-lead the Emotionally Free® Media Course held at the “Immaculate Heart Retreat Center.”
Since I was in the location where I had lived for several years before my marriage in 1966, some of my old friends organized a 40-year reunion for me. In those early years, I had begun writing and teaching on the supernatural gifts of the Holy Spirit.
Two Spokane friends, Cordie Barber and Lucy Durham, prepared a reunion dinner and meeting which took place after the retreat seminar. We all had changed over the years, but when we spoke or smiled at one another, we reconnected in the spirit.
I immediately recognized one of the guests, Fran Wray, who had received a miraculous healing from the Lord from deafness in one ear when we prayed for her in 1965. When the group gathered after our meal, I asked Fran, “How is the healing of your right ear?” She jubilantly replied, “It is still healed after all these years!”
That was an exciting witness to us all. Sometimes those who doubt God’s healing for today will say, “The ‘healed’ person only had a psychological reaction and it won’t last.” Not so with Fran.
“Fran tells her story” I asked Fran to tell her story to the group who had gathered for the reunion. Some of the earliest participants were in our meeting.
“I was deaf in my right ear for about 20 years,” said Fran. “I had become concerned about my teenaged children and foster children, as I needed to be able to hear to take care of them.”
“Rita Reed [now Bennett] had been teaching on the Gifts of the Spirit for a number of us meeting at Betty Moore’s home. That night she was speaking on the “Gift of Miracles.”
“During prayer time Rita asked, ‘Does anyone have anything wrong with their right ear?” I was surprised in that I had told no one about the problem with my ear. I raised my hand and said, ‘Yes, I do.’ “
“Rita said, ‘Come and sit in this chair so we can all gather around you.’ “
“When she laid her hands on my ears and commanded my right ear to ‘be opened,’ I felt a warmth that went from my left ear to my right ear.”
“Then Rita whispered in my right ear, ‘Can you hear me?’ And I said, ‘Yes!’ “
“The next day I went to my internist, Dr. Gene Beiver’s, office to have him test my ear. He said to me, ‘Fran, you’ve been healed. There is no doubt about it!’ “
Fran quipped to me with a smile, “If people say they do not believe that God heals through prayer today,” I would say, “Baloney.” When I taught on the supernatural gift of miracles in Spokane, it built faith in me and others to expect a miracle of healing. I believe that an instant healing is in the double category of miracles and healing. When Jesus healed the deaf man, Scripture says, “Then looking up to Heaven, He signed and said to him, ‘Ephphatha,’ that is, ‘Be opened.’ And immediately his ears were opened” (Mark 7:31-37). Those were the same words I had spoken, only in English.
“The Word of God and Faith” Since Jesus was Jewish, I will quote a Hebraic version of this Scripture. “Taking him off alone, away from the crowd, “Yeshua” [Jesus Christ] put His fingers into the man’s ears . . . then, looking up to Heaven, He gave a deep groan and said to him, ‘Hippatach’ (that is, ‘Be opened!’). His ears were opened, and his tongue freed, and he began speaking clearly.” (David H. Stern, “Complete Jewish Bible,” 2004). No matter what language you speak in prayer, God the Holy Spirit understands and works on your behalf.
“God, the Healer” I am not a “healer.” God is the Healer but He works through Believers today when we in faith obey His Word.
In this instance, I was simply God’s delivery girl. Fran was the one who received His Gift of Healing. Though I had the joy of following in Jesus’ (Yeshua’s) footsteps, all glory goes to Him.
