Volunteerism is alive and well in Edmonds and other South Snohomish County cities.

A group of 12 volunteers, , already involved with the Everett Animal Shelter,  started the Animal Rescue Foundation (ARF) six years ago to provide support and care for abused, injured and sick animals of many species.

One of hundreds of stories has to do with a Golden Lab, given to a young lady by her parents, that was hit by a car.

The necessary repair surgery was going to cost $5,000 and the young lady simply didn't have the money.

ARF stepped up to the plate and, thanks to a donor who provided funding that even exceeded the amount for the surgery, saved the dog's life.  He is thriving in his new home.

Another story has to do with two Pomeranians, both with broken legs due to a bone density problem caused by poor feeding practices of a disgusting puppy mill.  They were restored to good health by ARF.

One ARF volunteer, the Beacon’s own Doug Kimball, is planting a vegetable garden, with a small group (they call themselves Produce Pals) with the intent of selling their produce to provide funds for ARF.  They expect to soon encourage others to do the same.  They even have plans to conduct classes on how to plant and cause these "Victory for Animals Gardens" to grow, and produce funding.  Possibly some of the resultant growers will peddle their wares at the very successful Edmonds Saturday Market.

I guess I would have to list myself and my family as animal lovers but that doesn't necessarily include all of the various species.  Crows and seagulls aren't among my favorites.  My dislike for seagulls stems from their penchant for using my freshly-washed car as a latrine.

There have been occasions when I was almost ready to believe that cows had learned to fly.  But I am greatly fond of dogs.

Our kids were raised with a full-size dachshund named Snuffy and after we lost him, a cross-bred lab-shepherd that we called Pal.

If anyone had mistreated either of them, they would have experienced my wrath.

The ARF is dedicated to the protection of animals in physical or medical trouble.  It's a cause worth considering.

If you should happen to want to volunteer with this group. you might wish to contact Doug Kimball at 425-330-1941.  Or, if you have in mind to make a tax-deductible donation to its continuance, you can do so at  "http://www.everettarf.org/"www.EverettArf.org or  "mailto:everettarf@hotmail.com"everettarf@hotmail.com.

This isn't intended as a fund-raising pitch... I just happen to like dogs. At least the ones who don't relieve themselves in my yard.
