The Constant Curmudgeon

Please take your grumps outside

Some people just can't be satisfied.

As just one example of a number of fine Edmonds restaurants, Claire's on Main Street may not appear in the usual corporate listings of five-star restaurants, but in my book it should.

Anyone who complains about the food or service there doesn't deserve the benefits of either.  Lunch or dinner at Claire's, a popular eatery, has a menu that includes just about everything including some Asian cuisine.

And, if you want a stack of pancakes for dinner, it's available and at the same price as it was for breakfast.  Their whole menu is available at the same price regardless of the time of day and served by an always-cheerful staff.

Do they get complaints?  Sad to say, on a very few occasions, yes.  I’ve been there and seen it happen.

It was my misfortune during my corporate days to dine occasionally with a couple that included a wife who was simply never satisfied.  We attended some pretty upscale restaurants (you know … corporate people spending corporate money like it was going out of style) in the five-star category.

I never once heard her voice satisfaction with anything.  It was embarrassing to be seated near her.

She even sniffed the bread in the wicker basket to see if the aroma was pleasing enough.  I always did without bread after her nose had dangled over it.

I guess we have some of those types in Edmonds, too.  They’re of the variety that consumes all but the last tidbit of a serving before declaring the offering inappropriate for their delicate palate in the hope that dinner will be comped, or at least discounted.

If I was Lin, the manager at Claire's, I might let them get away with that once.  But then I'd bounce them out on their ear … or rear … whichever comes first.
