YMCA seeks clothing bags, products

The Working Women's Wardrobe program is in need of clothing bags and personal care products.  Over 1,200 women yearly access the clothing program to receive clothing that can be used either for the interview or for the workplace.  The clothing selected is put into department store paper bags that the participants can take home with them.  Personal care products such hair care products, soaps, body lotions, deodorant, tooth paste and brushes are  also in short supply.  All items may be dropped off at the YWCA Pathways for Women shelter in Lynnwood at 6027 208th St SW or at the Everett YWCA located at 3301 Broadway.  For more information, please feel free to call Luanne Kunz at 425-258-2766 ext 150.

Edmonds School District slates Community Budget Meetings

Coming up is a series of community and staff meetings during the months of March and April, and the public is invited to attend and learn how the budget planning for the 2011-12 school year is evolving.

'Nominate A Youth' deadline extended

Within the Snohomish County community, hundreds of young citizens are achieving personal success beyond academics and sports.

The Youth Challenge Awards Committee needs your help to give these young people the credit they deserve. 

Help recognize the outstanding youth whose contributions usually do not make the headlines but probably should. 

Nominate a 7th-12th grade Snohomish County youth for community service, courage, creativity, environmental service, inspiration or leadership.

Garden Club offering scholarship

The Alderwood Garden Club is offering a $1000 scholarship In a horticulture related field.  

Students residing within Edmonds School District or who are recommended by a member of the Alderwood Garden Club, or be currently enrolled in a horticulture related certificate or degree program at an accredited institution of Higher Education within Washington State are eligible to apply.

Applications are available in the Edmonds District high school counseling offices and the Edmonds Community College Horticulture Department.

Saturday Night Dance

Join Charles England, Golden State Dance Teachers Association and a Certified World Swing Dance Council Instructor for five weeks of dance.

Edmonds Streamside Landowners Short-Course

Four Thursday Evenings in April (7th- 28th ) with two local/Edmonds.

Two Saturday site visits: one in April and one in May.

Class Location is at Willow Creek Hatchery, 95 Pine Street, Edmonds.

This FREE 4-week course will educate the streamside landowner on such areas as: watershed awareness, monitoring and restoration efforts they can use, understanding the role they play as a streamside landowner , understanding the laws and ordinances around streams and wetlands, basic  juvenile salmonid ID, wildlife habitat needs, proper planting  and landscaping needs for streamside living.

The course will include two streamside and wetland site visits along with a site visit to local rain garden.

DAR to meet

The Peter Puget Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will meet on April 16 at 10:30 a.m. in the Mountlake Terrace Library, 23300 58th Ave. W., Mountlake Terrace.

Brunch will be served.

Guests will be outstanding students from Holy Rosary School, Edmonds, and St. Mary Magdalen School, south Everett. Students will read their winning essays on American History.

Alumni Association accepting scholarship applications

Scholarship application forms for the 2011 Edmonds School District Alumni Association (ESDAA) scholarships are now available in the Edmonds School District high schools or online at the Edmonds District web site at www.edmonds.wednet.edu/alumni. 

Seniors graduating from any of the Edmonds School District high schools are eligible to apply for these awards of $1,000 to $5,000.  Last June, 22 students received scholarships totaling $22,000 and are now pursuing their education in many different educational programs. 

Some of the scholarships are unrestricted and can be applied to any educational program after high school. 

Others are restricted and specific as to programs such as vocational/technical, education, and music or for students from a particular high school. 

Financial need is a factor in some of these scholarships.  Applications are due to the high school scholarship chairpersons on April 18, 2011.  If you are interested in contributing or setting up a scholarship, please call 425-431-7084 or email fitzdl@aol.com.

North Sound Church offers Alpha course

The Alpha Course is an opportunity to explore the meaning of life.   There are eight thought provoking weekly sessions held in a relaxed setting.  This will be one of the most important courses you will ever take.

Alpha is a practical introduction to the Christian faith.

The Alpha course is free.  Each Alpha session includes a meal, a video and discussion.  Each guest receives a course book. Everyone is welcome to come to an Alpha course and people attend for a wide variety of reasons.  Some want to investigate whether God exists and if there is any point to life;  others are concerned about what happens after death. Community Alpha Course (adults 18 and up) begins April 19 from 6 to 8:30 p.m.(includes dinner, video and discussion).  Course held at North Sound Church (404 Bell Street, Edmonds) and free child care is provided.

PCC Natural Market (9803 Edmonds Way, Edmonds).  Course will be held on Thursday mornings beginning April 21 from 7:30 to 8:45 a.m. (includes continental breakfast, video and discussion.)

The Edmonds Egg Hunt will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 23, at Edmonds City Park.

Senior Softball Players

The City of Edmonds is looking for Senior Softball players.  If you're a male over the age of 55 or a female over the age of 50 and looking to play softball, you found the right place.  We have players from 55 up to 83 years old.  Our league runs from May thru July  and games are Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9 a.m. or 10:30 a.m. at  Meadowdale Playfields in Lynnwood.   For more information call Todd at 425-771-0229.

Sex trafficking meeting

Sex trafficking of children goes on right here in Snohomish County.  How could this happen?  What can we do to help the victims and stop the vicious exploitation?  The public is invited to a meeting sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Snohomish County Thursday, at 7 p.m. on  April 28, at the Mukilteo Rosehill Community Center.  A panel of experts will describe the Everett-to-Tacoma prostitution circuit, current law enforcement efforts and legal challenges, and what is needed to help these vulnerable teen victims recover.  For more information, call 425-334-8922.

Floretum Garden Club offers Horticulture Scholarship

The Floretum Garden Club of Edmonds is offering a $1000 scholarship to a 2011 high school graduate, community college student, or individual planning a career in a horticultural field.

The applicant will be selected based on the following criteria:

·      Interest in horticulture, floral design, landscape design, botany. forestry, or a related field.

·      Financial need.

·      Legal resident.

·       A 3.25 grade point or higher.

·      Activities and achievements in school and community.

The recipient may attend any community college, college or university in the State of Washington.

Shelter needs donations

YWCA Pathways for Women shelter located in Lynnwood is for homeless, single women with children.  These families transitioning out of the shelter into housing are in great need of basic household items.

They are asking our community for donations of twin and double sheets, new pillows, pots/pans and silverware as well as personal care products (shampoo, soap, deodorant, etc).

"Friends of the Sister City" seek volunteers

Hekinan, Japan has been a Sister City with Edmonds for 22 years.  The Edmonds Sister City Commission plans various activities each year to bridge these two cultures and build goodwill.

To expand the work of the Commission, a new group of volunteers called "Friends of the Sister City" is now forming. 

The group will assist the Commission when Hekinan students visit Edmonds every summer in August, and when adult delegations periodically visit Edmonds in October. 

Volunteers can determine the amount of time they have available to help.  They will work as a group to prepare for the Hekinan delegation visits.  Some volunteers will help during the time the visitors are here.

Help them get there - Be a mentor!

Mentoring Children of Promise is a community based mentoring program for children with a parent involved in the criminal justice system.

They are looking for adult volunteers, 21 and over, who want to share activities with a youth for eight hours a month.  Mentors meet regularly with the child and offer friendship, support and guidance.  Mentors are required to make a minimum of a two-year commitment.  They take every precaution to screen carefully by requiring an application, mentor training and an in home interview.  They match mentors to children who live in a close proximity, have similar interests and are a good fit in terms of personality.  At MCP, their greatest hope is to create matches that last a lifetime.

The YWCA Pathways for Women shelter in Lynnwood is always in need of household items for their families who are moving offsite into transitional housing.  

They are in need of silverware, especially forks, new or gently used pots and pans with lids, sets of dishes, glassware, baking pans and cutlery. 

Also needed are towels sets and personal care products.

The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), sponsored by Catholic Community Services, seeks persons over 55 for many interesting and meaningful volunteer opportunities in the community.

There are more than 400 RSVP volunteer opportunities throughout the county, just waiting to be filled.

RSVP enrollees receive free supplemental liability, accident and automobile insurance covering them while they perform their volunteer duties along with an ongoing personal recognition program and the chance to meet new people and learn new skills.

Volunteer Chore Services (VCS) is seeking volunteers to provide low-income elders and disabled adults help with a variety of everyday tasks.  Volunteers provide valuable services such as light housekeeping, laundry, shopping, yard work, light meal preparation, and similar independent living requests. 

Volunteers are screened, orientated and trained. 

The hours are flexible, the work is gratifying and the difference is life affirming!

Volunteers needed at Edmonds Senior Center

Fun and meaningful volunteer opportunities are available, helping local senior citizens by helping at the South County Senior Center.  One area in immediate need of assistance is the Thrift Store where both clerks and cashiers are needed.  Retail experience is helpful, but we will be happy to train you for the job.  Opportunities for both paid instructors and volunteers include:  instructors for watercolor classes, a licensed massage therapist for seated chair massage, an instructor for a self-publishing writers group, and computer instructors.   Come have some fun, enjoy our waterfront location, and help our senior community.   Edmonds Senior Center is located at 220 Railroad Ave. Call the Center at 425-774-5555 for information.

The Greater Edmonds Chamber of Commerce has positions open for volunteers at the Log Cabin Visitor's Bureau in beautiful downtown Edmonds.

The Log Cabin is open from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, and Saturdays from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.

Volunteers at the Log Cabin provide visitors with information about Chamber and City activities, events, lodging, shopping, and dining in Edmonds, as well as information about living and working in Edmonds.
